I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this stuffed toy whale! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Whale sewing pattern!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First choose some whale fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n

A toy whale can be all sorts of colours!<\/span><\/p>\n

FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, 1 main and 1 contrast piece, leaving the straight edge open.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 2
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance to 3mm(1\/8inch) and turn the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I use a wooden chopstick to help me turn the seams nicely! Run the chopstick along the stitching of the seam inside the FLIPPERS<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

DON\u2019T STUFF the flippers NOW!<\/em><\/h1>\n

First pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> around the curved edge so that the seam lies flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stitch around the curved edge, using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance, to create a flat seam around the FLIPPER<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 4a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> with toy-stuffing. Don’t over stuff them, they should be flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 4b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin along the straight edge to hold the stuffing in place.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the\u00a0BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, along the middle seam, from A \u2013 B.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It is very easy to muddle up the top and the bottom of the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so make sure to sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the middle seam. (The whale’s eyes are on the sides so check that you are sewing the seam on the opposite side to the whale’s eye!)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TOP TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching point B.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft eyes insert them now using the pattern markings to guide you with their position. If you are embroidering the eyes or using felt, you will sew them after the toy is stuffed.)<\/span><\/p>\n

THROAT AND TUMMY<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the THROAT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the dots of the pattern markings.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the THROAT & TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, along the middle seam, from A \u2013 D. Don’t forget to leave the gap open, for turning the whale, on the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching point D.<\/span><\/p>\n

* I have outlined the TAIL BASE PIECE in red in the photo below so it’s easier to see!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, line up the front of each FLIPPER<\/strong><\/span> with the pattern markings on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

* I have marked the back of each FLIPPER with a red line in the photo below.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 12a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin\u00a0 the whale together along the sides next \u2013 matching point point A at the front and E on the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the\u00a0 pattern markings for the flipper position, on the sides.<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Take it slow and use lots of pins and ease the pieces together as you go.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 12b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew right around the whale, along the sides, without a gap. Sew an extra zig zag stitch to secure the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> if the whale toy is for a young child. They will be tugged on quite a lot and you want them to be sewn in really well.<\/span><\/p>\n

* Don\u2019t forget<\/strong> – There will be ONE MORE line of stitching for you to do on the tail AFTER you turn your whale right sides out. This gives the tail a nice shape —> so don\u2019t forget to sew it!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 13a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams well especially around the very curved seams.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 13b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance around the TAIL PIECES<\/span> <\/strong>before you turn your whale right sides out. This help it to turn out nice and smooth and flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find it\u2019s easier to turn the whale if I pull the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> out first!<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 14a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Do not stuff your whale now!<\/strong> BEFORE you begin stuffing, pin the edge of the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so that the edge seam lies flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is the same way you did the flippers, BUT I have drawn this in the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> pattern markings to show you where to start and end the stitching line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 14b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew a line of stitching around the edge of the tail using a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance to create a flat seam around the edge of the tail.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the tail area firmly with toy-stuffing, use small bits of stuffing to get right into the tips of the tail. Fill the nose and head area next, making sure the nose is firmly stuffed, then fill the rest of the body with toy-stuffing.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 16a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use the felt templates to cut out felt for the CHEEK<\/strong><\/span> and BLOW HOLE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Yes! A whale has 2 blowholes!!! Glue or sew the BLOW HOLE PIECES<\/span><\/strong> onto your whale using the pattern markings to help guide you.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 16b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Glue or sew the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> onto your whale using the pattern markings to help guide you.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you are making the toy for a child under 3 years old, you should also use felt for the eyes (instead of craft eyes).\u00a0<\/span>I have a blog post with <\/span>more toy safety tips HERE<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 17

Use a ladder stitch to sew the opening on the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed.<\/span><\/p>\n
