These chubby chicks are great for using up your colourful fabric scraps. Kids will love this simple pattern as they’ll can customise their own egg-shaped Easter friend with a bow-tie and cute egg-shell hat!<\/span><\/p>\n

We start with the FACE:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 1a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the front, from A -B.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure you sew the front seam and NOT the side seam – it\u2019s an easy mistake to make!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip this seam well.<\/p>\n

TUMMY:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the front, from B – E.<\/p>\n

BEAK:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Place the TOP BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and the BEAK BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, right sides together, matching the dot pattern marking.<\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TOP BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BEAK BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams really well (especially the curved bit by the dot markings.)<\/p>\n

Fold the TOP BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (with the fabric right sides together) and sew the beak dart<\/strong> closed at B.<\/p>\n

STEP 5a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the BEAK<\/strong><\/span> with a bit of toy stuffing.<\/p>\n

STEP 5b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the open edges, matching point B.<\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BEAK<\/strong><\/span> in between the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching point B , so that the beak dart is touching the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the BEAK in between. Sew from C – B – C on the other side.<\/p>\n

EYES:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft eyes<\/strong><\/span> insert these now. You can also use beads, buttons or embroider the chicks eyes instead.<\/p>\n

FOOT PIECES:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 8a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trace 2 FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> onto a double layer of fabric (right sides together).<\/p>\n

STEP 8b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew on the sewing lines you traced, leaving the straight edges open for turning. Cut the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> out with a 3mm (\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 8c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams between the \u2018toes\u2019. (This is important to do otherwise the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> will not turn out nicely.) Turn the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong>Use a sharp object like a wooden chopstick to push the \u2018toes\u2019 out properly so the seams are nice and smooth.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the edge of the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> nice and flat, then sew around the curved edges, using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance to create a nice flattened seam around them.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing and pin the opening closed.<\/p>\n

STEP 11a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the 3 dot pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

STEP 11b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in between. Sew from D – E – D on the other side.<\/p>\n

WINGS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trace, sew and turn the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> exactly like you did the FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Do NOT<\/span> sew a flat seam around the WINGS<\/strong><\/span>. (I like the wings to be a little fatter than the feet!)<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing and pin the stright edges closed.<\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the double dot pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Check that the wings are positioned the right way up – make sure the \u2018longer edge\u2019 is up (closest to the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

BACK:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from A – T – G.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure you sew the back seam and NOT the side seam – it\u2019s an easy mistake to make!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE,TUMMY&BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them together along the side seams, leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing as shown on the pattern markings (at G).<\/p>\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the Chick right sides through the turning gap.<\/p>\n

STEP 18

Stuff the Chick with toy stuffing. It should have a nice firm egg-shape but not be too firmly stuffed so it falls over and won\u2019t stay upright!<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the turning gap closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 20a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BOW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together leaving the turning gap.<\/p>\n

Trim the \u2018corners\u2019 of the seam allowance and turn the BOW<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong>Use a wooden chopstick or turning tool to make the corners nice and \u2018pointy\u2019.<\/p>\n

STEP 20c

Sew the turning gap closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold and sew the TIE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> down one side. Turn the TIE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> right sides out to form a \u2018flat tube\u2019, with the seam at the back. (I find an easy way to turn a \u2018flat tube\u2019 like this is to use a needle to pull the machine stitching tails through the TIE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.)<\/p>\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Finger-press the TIE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> \u2018tube\u2019 so it\u2019s nice and flat, then fold down a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam on one side. Fold the BOW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in half then fold them back on themselves to form a bow-shape. Wrap the TIE PIEC<\/strong><\/span>E around the centre of the BOW PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, fold under a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam on the other end and sew the ends together with a hand-stitch.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I like to hand-stitch the TIE to the BOW PIECES as well to secure it so it stays nicely centred.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Hand-stitch the TIE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> about 2cm or 1 inch below the BEAK<\/strong><\/span>. (If the chick is for a very young child you may also want to sew the corners of the BOW<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> too so it cannot be pulled off easily!)<\/p>\n

EGG SHELL HAT:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut 4 EGG SHELL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from white felt. Remember to cut 2 of the SHELL <\/strong><\/span>PIECES<\/strong><\/span> reversed – they must not all be the same. (Felt can be turned either way but I do this to make sure that any pen marks are on the inside where they won\u2019t be seen!)<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the SHELL <\/strong><\/span>PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs along the LONG<\/span> sides. Open up the PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and pin and sew the pairs together along the SHORT<\/span> sides. Pin the EGG SHELL<\/strong><\/span> hat on the chick and glue or hand sew the SHELL HAT in place.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>It doesn\u2019t have to be straight – you can have it off to one side if you like!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
