I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Manatee Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a manatee toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Monty Manatee Sewing Pattern<\/strong>.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We start sewing his BACK:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from A \u2013 B, matching the cross pattern marking.<\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together and sew the front darts closed.<\/p>\n

SNOUT & LIP:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from C – A – C.<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together and sew the snout darts and front dart closed. (There are 3 darts altogether!).<\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the LIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from D – K.<\/p>\n

STEP 6a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the LIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 6b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the LIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from C – D – C. Do NOT sew all the way to the edge of the LIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> – stop at point C. (See the black dots in the photo below).<\/p>\n

EYES:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft eyes insert them now.<\/p>\n

TUMMY:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from H – L, matching the 2 crosses of the pattern markings. Remember to leave the gap open for turning and stuffing!<\/p>\n

CHIN:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, fabric right sides together, and sew the chin dart closed.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from C – H – C, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

FLIPPERS:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs (one main and one contrast piece).<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance to 3mm (\u215b inch) and turn the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to use a wooden chopstick to help turn the seams. Run the end of the stick back and forth along the stitching inside until the seam is nice and smooth.<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

DON\u2019T STUFF the<\/strong> FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> NOW! First pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> around the curved outside edge so that the seam lies flat.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stitch around the curved edge, using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance, to create a flat seam around the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> with toy-stuffing leaving the top 12mm(\u00bdinch) unstuffed and pin them closed along the straight edge to hold the stuffing in place.<\/p>\n

(Don\u2019t overstuff them, keep them flat!).<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the dot pattern markings.<\/p>\n

SEW THE SIDES TOGETHER:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the LIP, SNOUT & BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHIN & TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew the Manatee together along the sides from E – C – K – C – E.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is a hard seam to sew so take your time and use LOTS of pins so the pieces don\u2019t slip as you sew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

TAIL:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, with right sides facing, on a rectangle of batting. Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together leaving the straight edge open for turning.<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> out with a 3mm (\u215b inch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and use a chopstick to turn the seam smoothly.<\/p>\n

*** Do not stuff the tail!***<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> \u2018inside\u2019 the BACK AND TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and pin it position, matching E on the sides and B\/L at the centre.<\/p>\n

\"Insert<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Roll the edges of the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> to the centre so it will fit in more easily!<\/p>\n

\"Insert<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 22a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in place from E – B\/L – E.<\/p>\n

STEP 22b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Secure the tail in place with zig-zag stitch.<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn your Manatee right sides out. I find it\u2019s easier if I pull the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> out first!<\/p>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so that the edges are flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew a line of stitching around the edge of the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance to create a flat seam around the edge of the TAIL<\/strong><\/span>. This is the same way you did the flippers, BUT I have drawn this in on the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> pattern markings to show you where to start and end the stitching line.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you are using a thick fabric like fleece, this can be a difficult seam for a beginner to sew on a sewing machine. I recommend sewing this seam by hand (with a tight backstitch).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 26
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fill the snout area very firmly, then fill the head area and the rest of the body with toy-stuffing.<\/p>\n

STEP 27
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are embroidering the eyes, do them now. Embroider a French knot for each nostril in black thread.<\/p>\n
