Plush toy eyes can be from beads, handmade teddy bear glass eyes, buttons, manufactured safety eyes, hand sewn knots, embroidery threads, felt and fabric scraps. If you think there&#8217;s something I have left out, or you have any other clever ideas for stuffed toy eyes , please leave a comment to let me know!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Use this simple guide to help you choose eyes to suit your style and toy!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. They are cheap (about $2 for 50!) \u2026 but can be \u2018nasty\u2019! What I mean is that they are cheaply made as they are mass produced. The beads are dip coated and some of the beads are uneven, stuck together or the coating has clogged the sewing hole! But for that price you can afford to throw some away.\u00a0\u00a0I like the ones with a \u2018narrow\u2019 hole through them and I sew them on with normal machine thread for the very small beads (2mm) and Guttermann upholstery thread for the bigger beads (4mm \u2013 6mm) I always used to sew them on with black thread, but when we did the Craft Tutorials at the Sydney Stitches and Craft Show, we only had white thread, and on both a grey and lilac fleece background this looked much neater! So I learnt a new trick!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Glass\u00a0Eyes (Teddy Bear\u00a0eyes):<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5125 alignnone\" style=\"border: 1px solid #A8A5A9; padding: 4px;\" title=\"glass-teddy-bear-eyes\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/glass-teddy-bear-eyes.jpg\" width=\"257\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5128\" style=\"border: 1px solid #A8A5A9; padding: 4px;\" title=\"glass-teddy-bear-eyes-inserting\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/glass-teddy-bear-eyes-inserting.jpg\" width=\"372\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Glass teddy bear <\/strong><strong><strong>eyes<\/strong><\/strong> are more expensive (About $1.75\/pair) but they are nice and secure when you sew them on with upholstery thread\u00a0\u00a0(or dental floss for the teddies and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Jake the jointed puppy<\/strong><\/span>!<\/span>) These are sometimes available form haberdashery stores but mostly from specialist stores as well as online teddy bear web sites. You can go a Google search for sites close to home to save on postage, but I get my glass bear\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong> from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"glass teddy bear eyes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gerrys.com.au\/home.php?cat=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gerry\u2019s Teddies<\/a><\/strong><\/span> as they are in Queensland, Australia, so they are \u2018local\u2019 for me!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Remember that buttons can be a choking hazard so there are better choices for safer\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> 4. Found at the most sewing and haberdashery shop. Don\u2019t forget to insert them BEFORE you stuff and sew you toys closed!!! Simply cut a tiny hole in the fabric and push the stem of the safety eye\/nose through to the other side. Place the washer on the stem of the eye,\u00a0place the eye,\u00a0 stem upwards on a flat surface, and push down on the washer with your thumbs\u00a0to push\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0eye and washer firmly together, till they fit nice and tight. Craft <strong>eyes<\/strong> are easy for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Soft Toy crafts for Kids\" href=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/stuffed-toy-crafts-for-kids\/\">childrens&#8217; craft projects and beginners<\/a><\/strong><\/span> who can&#8217;t embroider or sew a button!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craft<\/strong> <strong>eyes<\/strong> are better to use if you are concerned about\u00a0<strong>toy<\/strong> safety when giving the\u00a0<strong>toy<\/strong> to a baby or young child. For a baby it is better still to hand sew the\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong> on like the Baby-safe Bunny. See embroidered\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong>\/ knots next\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. The thicker threads will give a bigger knot so a bigger eye. It takes a bit of practice to get a knot right but once you have learned how to make a\u00a0<strong>French knot\/ Colonial knot<\/strong>, they are really quick and easy! I used the knots for my\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Baby-safe Bunny - embroidered eyes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/products\/instant-downloads\/baby-bunny-rabbit-soft-toy-sewing-pattern-instant-download\">Baby-safe Bunny<\/a><\/strong><\/span> so they are totally safe for babies \u2013 YAY!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">6. I like to stitch the\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong> to the head by embroidering the felt eye with a contrasting colour thread. Either a blanket stitch or just some large stitches like I did with the crocodile\u2019s\u00a0<strong>eyes<\/strong>. Again, totally safe for babies!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">7. Stuff a little bit of\u00a0<strong>toy<\/strong> stuffing in the cup and pull very tight to make the googly eyeball! Sew lots of small stitches to hold the fabric nice and secure at the back. I use 2 glass pins to check the position of my toys&#8217; pupils, and this also holds the eye balls in place when I sew them to the head by hand. (Use a ladder stitch, or simply make sure your stitches are hidden \u2018under the eyeball!).
