If you can’t find fur for Horsey Horse\/Unix Unicorn<\/span><\/a><\/strong> – don’t worry!!!! In this post, I’ll be showing you how to make a MANE<\/strong><\/span> and TAIL<\/strong><\/span> from fleece AND yarn(wool).<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s make a MANE & TAIL from FLEECE!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

You need to download the EXTRA pattern pieces for the FLEECE MANE<\/strong><\/span> & FLEECE TAIL<\/strong><\/span> ~><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut 2 MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and 1 TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from your fleecy fabric. Cut the tassels in the MANE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, as shown on the pattern pieces, leaving a band along the one side.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 3<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides together and cut a piece, about 4cm ( 1\u00bd inches), for Horsey’s fringe\/forelock.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 4<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the 4 cm piece of the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and pin the rest of the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. Sew them in this position. (Continue on with the pattern instructions for Horsey\/Unix Unicorn).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the tassels for the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> in half and in half again and pin it like this at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 6<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the fleecy TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in position and sew it in place between the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (Continue on with the pattern instructions for Horsey\/Unix Unicorn).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 7<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If the tassels are ‘getting in your Horsey’s eyes – you can trim the front tassels of the MANE<\/strong><\/span> with some scissors if you think he needs a hair cut!<\/span><\/p>\n

How to make a MANE & TAIL from YARN(WOOL):<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

There are so many fancy types and textures in yarns these days – you get variegated, misted, fuzzy, wavy, bobbly, shimmery, shiny\/sparkly types. I decided to keep it plain for the demonstration, so I used a plain blue and a plain yellow and simply mixed the 2 yarns together!<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you haven’t already done it – get the EXTRA pattern pieces NOW!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

You need to download the EXTRA pattern pieces for the YARN(WOOL) MANE<\/strong><\/span> & YARN(WOOL)<\/strong> TAIL<\/strong><\/span>~><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Glue the MANE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to some firm card and cut out your template. Sew across the one side of the template, about 5mm\/\u00bc inch from the edge – THREE TIMES<\/strong>! This will hold the yarn(wool) firmly and make the cardboard easy to tear apart. Cut the yarn(wool) on the opposite side to where you have sewn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I used 210gsm card but you will need to make sure that your sewing machine can sew through the card that you use – so please check the manufacturer’s guidelines for your particular sewing machine or sew the yarn(wool) by hand if you are concerned your machine won’t handle the card.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 3<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the yarn(wool) at the other side and remove the cardboard template by tearing the cardboard along the stitching line.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 4<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut a piece about 4cm ( 1\u00bd inches) for Horsey’s fringe\/forelock. <\/span>Pin the 2 pieces to the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> and BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew them in place. (Continue on with the pattern instructions for Horsey\/Unix Unicorn).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Wrap the yarn(wool) around the TAIL TEMPLATE<\/strong><\/span>. (You can adjust how thick you want your tail to be by how many strands you wrap.) Thread a piece of yarn(wool) through the loops you have wrapped around the card, and tie them together at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Tie another piece of yarn(wool) around all the tail strands about 5mm\/\u00bc inch from the end.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 6<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in position and sew it in place between the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (Continue on with the pattern instructions for Horsey\/Unix Unicorn).<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Once again, trim of the MANE<\/strong><\/span> a bit at the front if it is getting in Horsey’s eyes.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0I think this ‘wild and woolly’ mane
\nmakes Horsey look like a ROCK STAR!<\/span><\/p>\n
