This started happening to me the other day so this time I decided to take some photos to show you the<strong> SIMPLE STEPS I use to fix this<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12484\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Jammed-sewing-machine-thread-tangled-up\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Jammed-sewing-machine-thread-tangled-up.jpg\" alt=\"Jammed sewing machine thread - tangled up\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/h1>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>OK, who hates HOUSEWORK?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>I do!!!! I hate the dreariness of cleaning and dusting the house and the thought of cleaning my sewing machine is just as painful &#8211; ha!ha!\u00a0 BUT I LOVE to sew and if I want my machine to work properly, I just have to give it<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">a clean and service!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So I dig out my handy tools &#8211; a <strong>cute little screw driver and brush<\/strong> that came with my sewing machine. NOW, looking at this photo, I&#8217;m soooooo embarrassed\u00a0 &#8211; they look filthy!!! I guess that shows that I use them!<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12486\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Sewing-machine-tools-cleaning-brush\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Sewing-machine-tools-cleaning-brush.jpg\" alt=\"Sewing machine tools cleaning brush\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>First thing I check&#8230; is <strong>under the bonnet<\/strong> &#8211; oops, I think the <strong>correct term is under the needle plate!<\/strong> I use the tiny screw driver to unscrew the needle plate and remove it so I can see what&#8217;s lurking below&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>OMG &#8211; how embarrassing! <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>It looks so dirty!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12485\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"remove-the-needle-plate-dust-fluff-lint-in-sewing-machine\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/remove-the-needle-plate-dust-fluff-lint-in-sewing-machine.jpg\" alt=\"remove the needle plate dust fluff lint in sewing machine\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s <strong>fabric fluff <\/strong>&#8211; NOT normal dust and dirt &#8211; so I guess I can be forgiven! BUT it is quite amazing just how quickly all this fluff or lint builds up! I know that if I am sewing with fluffy fabrics like fleece, minky, chenille, flannelette, even corduroy, the lint builds up MUCH quicker.<\/p>\n<p>OK, here is a pic after I have used the teeny brush to give it a good sweep clean!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">My mum would be proud!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12487\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"remove-needle-plate-clean-sewing-machine\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/remove-needle-plate-clean-sewing-machine.jpg\" alt=\"remove needle plate - clean sewing machine\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Then I check the <strong>bobbin mechanism<\/strong>. Yuk! That is full of fluff too! No wonder the threads are NOT running through smoothly!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12488\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Clean-bobbin-mechanism-lint-fluff\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Clean-bobbin-mechanism-lint-fluff.jpg\" alt=\"Clean bobbin mechanism - lint fluff\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can<strong> use a hair dryer<\/strong> to blow out the fine particles but I prefer just to use my <strong>LUNG POWER<\/strong> to blow it out myself!\u00a0 WOW &#8211; what a difference a quick dust can make!!!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Clean as a whistle!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12489\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"clean-sewing-machine-bobbin-mechanism\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/clean-sewing-machine-bobbin-mechanism.jpg\" alt=\"clean sewing machine bobbin mechanism\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Then I <strong>oil my sewing machine<\/strong>. I only put the teeniest drop of sewing machine oil where the manual says&#8230; don&#8217;t want to flood the engine!!! Please CHECK YOUR MANUAL &#8211; some sewing machine do NOT NEED OIL!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;m feeling a bit like a mechanic by now!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12490\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"oil-sewing-machine-service-maintenance\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/oil-sewing-machine-service-maintenance.jpg\" alt=\"oil sewing machine - service maintenance\" width=\"520\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Then I run the sewing machine for a bit <strong>without any thread<\/strong> &#8211; just to <strong>allow the oil to work in. <\/strong>Then I <strong>reload my bobbin<\/strong> in the <strong>bobbin cartridge<\/strong>. I make sure the thread is threaded in the right direction and flowing freely before I put the bobbin back in the machine and check it is locked in place, nice and tight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12491\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"reload-bobbin-thread-sewing-machine-service\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/reload-bobbin-thread-sewing-machine-service.jpg\" alt=\"reload bobbin thread - sewing machine service\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Then I <strong>change my sewing machine needle<\/strong> and make sure I don&#8217;t have it back to front!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12492\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Sewing-machine-service-change-needle\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Sewing-machine-service-change-needle.jpg\" alt=\"Sewing machine service - change needle\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>HOW often should you change your sewing machine needle?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> <\/strong>Mmmmmm&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">MORE OFTEN than I do??? \ud83d\ude42<\/h2>\n<p>No,seriously, it depends on the individual and what you are sewing and <strong>how much sewing you are doing<\/strong>. I have heard that you should <strong>change your needle after every 4-5 hours of sewing<\/strong>. I&#8217;m terrible with changing needles, probably because I don&#8217;t realize how much time I have spent sewing (time flies when you&#8217;re having fun!) I just know by the time things start choking and snagging, my needle is WAY PASSED its USE BY DATE!!!!<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Back to the top of the sewing machine&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><br \/>\nNext I <strong>checked my<\/strong> <strong>sewing machine&#8217;s tension dial<\/strong>. When I bought my sewing machine, I went for lessons and they told me it is unlikely I would need to change the tension and to their credit &#8211; they were right! So I just like to make sure that I haven&#8217;t knocked it and changed the tension by mistake and that it is still set to the default setting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12493\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Sewing-machine-check-tension-control-dial\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Sewing-machine-check-tension-control-dial.jpg\" alt=\"Sewing machine check tension control dial\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then I <strong>re-thread my top thread<\/strong> and give the sewing machine a test! I like to use a zig-zag stitch and sew back and forth until the white cotton actually looks white! \ud83d\ude42 This cleans up the excess oil &#8211; now you can see why I only use the tiniest drop of oil!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12494\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"test-sewing-machine-stitching-after-oiling\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/test-sewing-machine-stitching-after-oiling.jpg\" alt=\"test sewing machine stitching after oiling\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then I <strong>try sewing a seam again<\/strong>&#8230; fingers crossed&#8230; have I fixed it????<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">HOORAY!
