These days it comes in so many groovy colours it&#8217;s hard to pick! The best thing about felt is that it doesn&#8217;t fray when cutting out so felt is so easy to work with! BUT for\u00a0great looking toys you want to make sure the pattern templates don&#8217;t slip while you&#8217;re cutting out your felt\u00a0 pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13915\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"cutting-out-felt-how-to-photo-tutorial\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cutting-out-felt-how-to-photo-tutorial.jpg\" alt=\"cutting out felt how to photo tutorial\" width=\"520\" height=\"423\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">BUT it&#8217;s HARD to cut small felt pieces ACCURATELY!<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When you are cutting out<strong> very small, fiddly pieces,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>PINNING felt pieces is NOT as accurate as you&#8217;d think<\/strong>. This is because the pattern templates move or slip as you cut and you can end up with some very wonky shapes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13913\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"felt-how-to-pins\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/felt-how-to-pins.jpg\" alt=\"felt how to - pins\" width=\"475\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How to cut Felt EASILY &amp; ACCURATELY &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5 different techniques!<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I no longer use pins myself, so I have put together this photo tutorial to show you 5 different techniques that I use to cut out Felt EASILY and ACCURATELY!\u00a0First up is the K.I.S.S technique!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1. &#8216;Keep It Simple Stupid&#8217; Technique!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>I love that saying!!! \ud83d\ude42<\/strong> AND it&#8217;s true &#8211; most of the time the simplest techniques work just fine. So don&#8217;t think you have to use anything fancy or expensive to get great results when you cut out felt pieces!\u00a0All you need &#8211; some sharp scissors and a steady hand!!! I use this technique <strong>for cutting out SIMPLE SHAPES<\/strong> that are an easy size to hold in place on the felt without slipping &#8211; so not too big and not too small.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13895\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"cutting-out-felt-technique-simple\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cutting-out-felt-technique-simple.jpg\" alt=\"cutting out felt technique - simple\" width=\"445\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hold the pattern piece<\/strong> and felt firmly together and cut out around the pattern piece, as far as I can go <strong>WITHOUT LETTING GO!<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You will need to <strong>turn the pattern piece and felt<\/strong> to cut the last little bit under your thumb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I put the scissors down while I turn the felt and pattern piece so I can <strong>hold the felt and pattern piece with both hands<\/strong> as I turn, this way it shouldn&#8217;t slip.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Double check that the pattern piece is lined up with the part you have already cut, then <strong>cut out the last little bit<\/strong>. Too easy!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: segoe; font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\">You&#8217;ll be surprised how accurate you can get with a bit of practice!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2. Trace &amp; Cut Technique.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There are lots of types of pens that will mark on felt. From right to left &#8211; fabric markers, black permanent markers (and laundry markers) ball point pen, EVEN pencil!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13903\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"fabric-marker-pens\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fabric-marker-pens.jpg\" alt=\"fabric marker pens\" width=\"520\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">I like to use<strong> fabric markers<\/strong>. My favourite fabric markers are a <strong>purple disappearing fabric marker<\/strong> or a <strong>blue water-erasable fabric marker<\/strong>.\u00a0 Usually I decide which pen to use, based on which colour will show up best on the felt&#8230; or whichever pen I can find at the time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: segoe; font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\">(For darker felt, use a white fabric \/ paint marker.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13899\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"felt-how-to-cut-out\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/felt-how-to-cut-out.jpg\" alt=\"felt-how-to-cut-out\" width=\"520\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Trace around the pattern piece<\/strong>, directly <strong>onto the felt<\/strong> with a fabric marker.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cut just &#8216;inside&#8217; the line you traced<\/strong> so your felt piece is the same size and the pattern piece and you don&#8217;t have too much pen ink on your felt piece.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Felt doesn&#8217;t have a right or wrong side, so if the pen is still noticeable, you can <strong>turn the felt piece over and place it<\/strong> on your soft toy with the <strong>traced side down<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As they say, <strong>practice makes perfect<\/strong> so don&#8217;t worry if you are a little bit shaky at first! If you have given it a good go and don&#8217;t feel you have a good grip (on this technique!) you may need to use technique 3 or 4.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: segoe; font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\">* please support your local patchwork\/quilting shop by buying one of these fabric markers from them if you can!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3. Tape it down Technique!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I use this method for<strong> VERY FIDDLY SHAPES<\/strong>, like <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Sammy Shark Soft Toy Sewing Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/products\/instant-downloads\/sammy-the-shark-soft-toy-sewing-pattern-instant-download\"><strong>Sammy Shark<\/strong><\/a><\/span>&#8216;s teeth, or<strong> VERY SMALL SHAPES <\/strong>of felt. The tape stops the template from slipping so you can be very accurate with your cutting!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13907\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"felt-cut-out-how-to-tape\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/felt-cut-out-how-to-tape.jpg\" alt=\"felt cut out how to - tape\" width=\"480\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Tape the pattern piece to your felt using normal sticky tape<\/strong> for small pieces. <strong>Clear packing tape is great for larger pattern pieces<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t press it too hard<\/strong>, the tape sticks easily to the felt. If you press it on too firmly it can pull and stretch the felt when you pull if off.! Test the tape on a small piece of your felt, some thinner acrylic craft felt will distort, so try and use better quality wool or wool-blend felt if you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cut out you pattern piece<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The felt and pattern pieces should come apart easily. <strong>Gently pull the tape off the remaining felt<\/strong> so as not to distort it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The great thing about this technique is that you can tape the pattern piece again and again because you are only cutting through the new tape. Perfect pieces again and again! The other thing that is good about this technique is that you do not end up with marker pen ink on your pieces, which is great for lighter coloured felt. Great for black felt too &#8211; where it&#8217;s impossible to see any traced lines!:D<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4. &#8216;Fancy&#8217; Freezer Paper Felt Technique<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is probably the technique that <strong>I recommend the LEAST<\/strong>! Why???<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: segoe; font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\">Well&#8230; I like things that are simple! \ud83d\ude42 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Freezer paper can also be <strong>expensive<\/strong>, <strong>hard to find<\/strong> and a bit <strong>more of a pain to use<\/strong> as you have to use an iron. <strong>I avoid housework if I possibly can &#8211;\u00a0 so ironing, in my mind at least, is extra work,<\/strong> especially when I find the tape method so quick and easy!\u00a0 BUT having said that, it IS a very accurate way of cutting out felt and some people swear by it. I would recommend using this technique for very fiddly pattern pieces that are highly likely to slip as you cut out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13911\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"freezer-paper-cut-out-felt\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/freezer-paper-cut-out-felt.jpg\" alt=\"freezer paper - cut out felt\" width=\"520\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Trace the pattern piece onto the freezer paper<\/strong>, paper side, not the shiny side!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Turn on your iron<\/strong> to heat up &#8211; be sure to set it to a <strong>LOW heat setting WITHOUT steam<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cut out a big square\/rectangle shape around the pattern piece<\/strong>, and<strong> iron it onto the felt<\/strong>. I place a piece of cotton fabric over my felt and freezer paper when I iron to make sure I don&#8217;t damage the felt with the heat of the iron.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cut the piece out on the tracing line<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Peel off<\/strong> the freezer paper piece.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">MAKE sure the<strong> iron is turned OFF<\/strong>!!!!!!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: segoe; color: #000000;\">* One good thing &#8211; is that at least the Freezer paper is reusable so it&#8217;s great if you will be cutting out lots of the same piece!<\/span><br \/>\n<br class=\"clear\" \/><br class=\"clear\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>5. Last but not least, the &#8216;Cheating&#8217; or NO CUT technique!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>I love this technique!<\/strong> \ud83d\ude42 So simple, quick and guaranteed to give perfect results every time! <strong>You don&#8217;t need to do any cutting either<\/strong>&#8230;. simply <strong>BUY the shapes pre-cut<\/strong> like these felt dots! So as far as cutting goes &#8211; it is cheating &#8211; BUT hey, the shapes look fantastic! haha!\ud83e\udd23<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13917\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 30px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Felt-spots-etsy\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Felt-spots-etsy.jpg\" alt=\"Felt spots - etsy\" width=\"486\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I found these<strong> pre-cut felt dots <\/strong>on Etsy&#8230;. So far I have only found acrylic\/craft felt pre-cut pieces and there are so many ways to use them!\u00a0They work well for eyes &#8211; look how they really <strong>highlight<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Dragon Toy sewing Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/products\/instant-downloads\/diggles-the-dragon-instant-download\"><strong>Diggles the Dragon<\/strong><\/a><\/span>&#8216;s eyes! <strong>The craft eyes hold them in place &#8211; no glue needed!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13921\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"felt-spots-for-toy-eyes\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/felt-spots-for-toy-eyes.jpg\" alt=\"felt spots for toy eyes\" width=\"516\" height=\"551\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You can also <strong>sew the felt spots in place so they are secure<\/strong>. I use a dot of craft glue in the middle of each felt dot\/spot to hold them in position. Then once the glue has dried, I hand sew over the felt with embroidery thread. (If the toy is for a young child or baby, sewing over the pieces with a satin stitch gives a lovely raised eye that won&#8217;t pill.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13922\" style=\"border: 1px solid #a8a5a9; padding: 4px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"felt-dots\" src=\"https:\/\/manage.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/felt-dots.jpg\" alt=\"felt dots\" width=\"596\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Felt dots look great for <strong>dolls faces<\/strong> too! I used them for the <strong>cheeks<\/strong> for my <a title=\"Elf Doll Sewing Pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.funkyfriendsfactory.com\/products\/instant-downloads\/elf-christmas-twins-doll-sewing-pattern-instant-download\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Christmas Elf Doll Sewing Pattern<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.
